Program History

In the fall of 2011, alumni from YMCA Youth and Government programs around the country met to discuss a collegiate model federal government program that would serve as a bridge to careers and engagement in public service. Derek Summerville, an alum from Florida, worked with the Pennsylvania program under CEO Lydia Mitchell to host a Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.

  • 2012 | Constitutional Convention & Founding
    The Constitutional Convention for the new program was held from March 23-25, 2012 at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Delegates from around the country gathered to draft the program constitution and formally found the program. The constitution was signed by delegates on March 25, 2012Founders Day.
  • 2013 | Inaugural National Assembly
    The Inaugural National Assembly was held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly in Black Mountain, NC from January 16-20, 2013. Sean Costello of Stonehill College and Sean Casey of the University of Florida, both elected at the Constitutional Convention, served as President and Vice-President of the Assembly.
  • 2015 | Assembly in Washington, DC
    After 3 years of hosting the Assembly in Black Mountain, the officers and delegates voted unanimously to move the Assembly to Washington, DC.
  • 2016 | Campus YMCA Congress
    In the summer of 2016, the program became known as the Campus YMCA Congress.
